Recommendations for equipping of the historic camp

The historical camp represents the continuation of that holistic image, which each of us tries to reproduce in his chosen epic. Unlike us, you have a car park and a place to sleep are static objects, which means that it will be easier for any outside observer to see their disadvantages. Of course, a tourist or a photographer does not indicate a discrepancy in epochs, for example, for the form of ceramics or the presence of water in them. But the polyethylene package left on the historic table can spoil everything that you’ve been working on for so long.
The recommendations for the arrangement can be divided into: stylistic, social and security.

    • Tents
      фvoid installing and assuming installation of other modern tents on the territory of the historic town. In case of violation detection, be sure to inform the organizers about this;

      – give preference tents, corresponding to the time interval of the event, the chosen culture, color gamut, etc .; еhe qualitative composition of the fabric on the tent remains the subject of the choice of the reconstructor, the tent should not look modern.

      – after installing a tent, hide inside everything that does not correspond to the periodization of the reconstruction; make sure that these objects are not visible from the outside (do not stick out from the edges);

      – in case of the presence of modern structural elements in the tent, make sure they are not within visibility for visitors and the press;

      People

      minimize the presence of people in modern clothes on the territory of the reconstruction camp, even if it is your close relatives and friends. If they really want to share the joy of the festival with you, then sew them a primitive set. You know, this clothes are very comfortable :) If you find a violation, be sure to inform the organizers about this.

      – If you decide to take with you children, sew them a primitive set (remember that in the early days some clothes were a sign of maturity, children do not need to wear all that you wear, and their kits can be much simpler). The issue of children’s shoes, of course, remains at the discretion of parents. As an option, we suggest to make children leather uppers / hangers, which will be worn over their usual sandals. In case you decide to put on your child’s modern clothes, it’s best to dress it completely to avoid mixing the styles.

      – think ahead of time about how your child will meet basic needs.Try to reduce the interference of modern strollers, pots, plastic bottles, couches in the style of the camp.. Sometimes there is enough primitive additional canopy or incomplete tent of thin twin to create a space for the mother with the child, where they can temporarily “get out of the image.” There are wicker cradles for hanging out babies, you can make a hammock from available blankets, buy sling (or sew your own with the corresponding cloth), a plastic bottle can make a birch bark or a wooden cover that will cover it when the bottle is standing on the table. Diapers can be covered with a longer shirt (do not leave the child naked legs).

      avoid mixing the modern and the past. If you want to go to the river to buy, take modern sandals and towels separately, hide them in a bag or sack. Change shoes or change clothes outside the historic camp. This will help to avoid photos in camisa and sneakers. If you carry a phone or camera with you, hide them in crackers, sabretaches, or under axilla.

      – remember that often the temperature modes change for a day. Take care of different clothes / shoes for this — for resting of legs or simple movements by camp you can buy / make lychees or patinas (depending on culture / era). Primitive shoes are also helpful in the early stages of forming kits. It is better to walk in it than in high boots or pseudo-historical slippers. Often, at festivals, people wear full sets only for a parade.Make sure that your everyday (underwear) kit is also consistent with the episode and made quite neatly. Most people will see you in it.

      – if you are tobacco dependent, avoid smoking in the territory of the historic camp. Cribs, unfortunately, are also not authentic for the early epochs.

      Dishes
      – in advance, ask what was the dish for your chosen age and culture. If purchasing / manufacturing turns out to be too expensive, focus on wooden or ceramic products of primitive shapes without modern decor.Remember that everyday dishes were the same everywhere. And expensive metal and glass products were in fact the status of the aristocracy. The fact that the mug is metallic does not make it historic.
      If you want to take a wooden rake in the camp, look for a crop, not collected from the plates, without souvenir type such as “Lviv” or “Truskavets”.
      In case of doubt – consult with the organizers of the festival. You will be referred to stores or contact masters.
      – Reconstructive boilers /frying pans are expensive products, so people often replace them with modern cast iron or aluminum containers. This greatly affects the look of the camp, especially if the tripod is also bought at the store.
      If your club does not have a historical booth, we recommend that you follow the following paths:
      – plan your diet so that it does not foresee cooking on fire during the entire festival (you can take non-spoiled food, you can count on local cafes).
      – cook only in the evening / early in the morning, when the camp has no press and tourists. Certainly after that, the copper should be hidden, and not left in a prominent place. The same goes for cooking coffee or consuming food in modern packaging within the historic camp.
      – try to focus on those types of cooking, which involves the use of heated stones or ceramic jugs / frying pans.

      Drinks and food

      Try to avoid products that were not inherent in your chosen epoch and culture. In the case of ancient times, make sure you do not keep potatoes, tomatoes, corn, pumpkins, beans, and sunflower in the visible places.
      In advance, seek out the rationale, characters for the era you are playing.
      Hide from the table and the visible areas of the camp tetrapacs, plastic bottles, modern glass and the like.

      To store a stock of technical water it is necessary to purchase a wooden bucket (in the goods for saunas) and a scoop. It is better to keep drinking water in the pitcher, so it will not overheat even in the sun.

      Do not keep garbage in modern bags, put the package in a jute bag. Find out where in the festival there are garbage cans and regularly take the garbage there. Do not store food garbage near tents, it can attract animals.

      If you buy drinks and lunches in the institutions that serve the festivals, bring with them a tableware: a cup and plates. This will reduce the amount of garbage after the event and will not affect the authenticity of your look.
      If there is no output, and you can only have a dish or drink in a disposable tableware, eat these products outside the historic camp.

      Other items
      – if there is a need to keep some inappropriate episode of inventory and things not in the tent (in a pogrom, near a log for firewood, near the table) choose one of the acceptable options:
      — а) hide them under the haystack or branches with leaves;
      — б) keep in a jute / hemp bag (it’s not a problem to buy them);
      — в) cover them with cloaks, blankets or rugs corresponding to the chosen epic.
      Try to use them at moments when the number of visitors in the camp is minimal.
      Hide things that do not match the epic right after you take advantage of them.

      Try to minimize the presence of modern items in your hands or on visible surfaces in the camp. Hide modern bags or containers immediately after use. Make sure your teammates do not leave modern dishes, household items or clothing items in prominent places. For the future, consider whether it is possible to replace these things with historical analogues or whether you can refuse their use at the time of the historic festival.

  1. Distance
    – historical camps are compact temporary settlements, where people are not familiar to each other. Remember the personal boundaries of others, be respectful and polite
    – if you set the camp early in the morning or at night, and there are already tents around, try not to be distracted and noisy;
    – make sure that you do not break the boundaries of existing camps with your own tent and inventory; it is better to ask once more than to silently pass this virtual boundary and find yourself in conflict;
    – before taking wood or hay from a heap, make sure that it is a shared resource and not reserved for someone else for personal use;
    – remember that the camp in the absence of any of its owners is intact. Anything, even the smallest trifle, can be moved only with the permission of the owners.

    Secular animals

    any brought animal at the festival is equivalent to a minor member of the club. Her owner must stay constantly next to her and ensure that nothing happens to the animal, and that it does not hurt or scare someone from the recruits or visitors. In advance warn the organizers that you bring to the festival of a pet, it will help to plan the site so that space is enough for everyone.
    Free grazing, walking or staying on a leash without a muzzle, the aggressive behavior of a dominant or frightened animal is unacceptable. You should think about such nuances in advance and make sure that you are ready to provide peace and order to yourself and to other participants of the festival.
    A large number of outsiders, who sometimes do not realize that animals also have a sense of personal distance, can lead to tragic consequences. Think twice before exposing them to such stress.

    Children
    – the guardians or parents are responsible for the safety of minor participants in the festival and their possible harm.
    – remember that not all the repairers are loyal to the children, so ask them before letting them go to someone in the camp.

  2.
    • Because of the risk of a fire in the camp, try to arrange a fire at a special site, which removes the upper layer of earth and turf. If possible, lay the hearth with stones or immerse it. Keep the technical water in the bucket near. Ensure that the water is always in the camp or within reach. At the end of the festival, put the turf in place.
    • Because of the risk of lightning damage, avoid installing a camp at the top of a hill, under high single trees.
    • Because of the risk of flooding, with the help of a spade, dig your tent so that rain does not pour your property.
    • Due to the presence of a large number of strangers on the territory of the festival, make sure that at least one person from your camp is at the same time in the camp. Try to install the tent in close proximity to the trail that visitors will go to. Better set up a fireplace or install a canopy with tables. Do not leave your property, secular animals and children unattended. Notify the organizers of cases when the property is violated by outsiders.

    Please think of your historical camp as part of your suit, an integral part of your club’s image.

    Hopefully, our recommendations will be useful to you!
